Adjective modifies the noun or pronoun in the sentence. It can describe the qualities of someone or something independently or in comparison to something else.

Classification of Adjectives:

There are Seven types of Adjective:

1.Adjectives of quality
2.Adjectives of quantity
3.Adjectives of number
4.Demonstrative Adjectives
5.Distributive Adjectives
6.Possessive Adjectives
7.Interrogative Adjectives

1. Adjectives of Quality

Adjectives of Quality indicates the qualities of something or someone. They give us information on the state, condition or character of the noun. 

Example: Good, Great, Bad, Poor etc.

  • He is a good boy.
  • This is a great idea.

2. Adjectives of Quantity

Adjectives of Quantity indicates the quantity of a noun or a pronoun. They are used with uncountable nouns. It only tells us the ‘how much’ noun is present there. We may use words like some, very, enough, so and most to describe the noun in terms of the adjective of quantity

Example: Much, Enough, Little, Some etc.

  • They have enough money.
  • She eats a whole apple daily.

3. Adjectives of Number

Adjectives of Number indicates the number or position of something or someone. It describes the words for countable nouns. Above all, It refers the number of nouns or their position or place in a particular order. 

Example: One, two, single, double, triple, first etc.

  • I have two phones
  • He is the first boy in the class

4. Demonstrative Adjectives

Demonstrative Adjectives indicates something or someone of noun or pronoun. They are placed before the nouns and pronouns they modify, and they always come first in adjective order.

Example: This, That, Those etc.

  • This car is expensive.
  • Those clothes are wet.

5. Distributive Adjectives

Distributive Adjectives indicates the distributive condition of noun. While these sentences mean that something is happening to an entire group, the distributive adjectives separate the groups into individual members. We are talking about what happens to the members of a group.

Example: Each, Every, Either, Both, Neither etc.

  • Every student must do his duty.
  • Each participant was asked to complete a survey.

6. Possessive Adjectives

Preposition is used to make a relationship between a noun or pronoun and another word in the sentence. It indicates the direction, time and place. It also refers ownership or possession of a noun

Example: By, With, Above, On etc.

  • He sat on the chair.
  • You will success in life.

7. Interrogative Adjectives

Interrogative Adjectives is used to ask the types of noun or pronoun. They modify the noun by seeking additional details or specifications. By using them appropriately, we can inquire about details, preferences, or characteristics related to the noun in question.

Example: What, Which, Whose etc.

  • What kind of birds do you like?
  • Whose phone rang?

Adjectives are words that enhance writing or speaking by adding rich details to the piece of work. They can describe various aspects such as size, color, shape, age, origin, material, or condition. Adjectives can be used to enhance the clarity and vividness of writing by providing vivid imagery and adding detail to descriptions. They play a crucial role in painting a picture in the reader’s mind and creating a more engaging and descriptive narrative. 

Some adjectives are superlative or comparative, which means that they are used to compare nouns. Overall, adjectives serve to enrich language by providing depth and specificity to our descriptions and expressions.
