Verb is used to do the action. It describes what the subject of a sentence is doing. Besides it can indicate (physical or mental) actions, occurrences, and states of being. Almost every sentence requires a verb, or else nothing happens!

Classification of Verb:

1. Finite Verb

Finite Verb is a verb which shows action of particular time or moment. Above all, it is a verb that has a subject and shows tense. 

Example:

  • He lives in Dubai.
  • They went to the station.
There are two types of Finite Verb:
 
a. Principal Verb: This verb is used without the help of other verbs.

Example:

  • He is a player.
  • We have many problems.

Principal Verb are two types

  1. Transitive Verb
  2. Intransitive Verb

Transitive Verb: 

It is an action which requires one or more objects to receive the action.                    

Example:

  • She likes this book.
  • He taught me.

Intransitive Verb:

It is an action which does not require one or more objects to receive the action.                   

Example:

  • She likes.
  • The sun set.
 

b. Auxiliary Verb: It is used to help to the main verb in the sentence.

Example:  am, is, are, was, were, may, might etc.

  • He is playing football.
  • I am reading a book.

2. Non Finite Verb

It is a verb which does not show tense in the sentence. It is often not the main verb in the sentence.

Example:

  • They enjoy shopping.
  • Sailing is my favorite sport.
There are three types of Non Finite Verb
a. Infinitive
b. Participle 
c. Gerund
 
a. Infinitive:  It is a form of verb which structure should be (to + present form of verb).
Example: 
  • He wants to get a good job.
  • We try to buy the tickets.

b. Participle: It acts as an Adjective in the sentence.

Example: 

  • I saw a running bus.
  • Having completed this work, I left this place.

c. Gerund:

It acts as a noun form and uses as subjects or objects in the sentence.

Example:

  • I like traveling.
  • Walking is a good exercise.
 

Overall, verb means to bring something to an end, to reach a decision or opinion after considering all the relevant information, or to finish something. They are essential for constructing sentences and conveying actions or states.
