The Past Perfect Continuous Tense shows the running action continued for some time in the past time. People use past perfect continuous tense to represent an activity or event that started earlier in time and resumed up until a certain point in time

Three types of verbs are used in Past Perfect Tense.

  • Past form of Auxiliary Verb (Had).
  • been
  • Main verb with adding ing form.

Structure 1:

Positive & Negative Form:

Subject + had/hadn’t + been + main verb with adding ing + Remaining Part of the sentence (If have). 

Example 1: I had been writing articles on various topics for three hours.

To compare the sentence according to the structure,

Subject= I

had + main verb with adding ing = had been writing

Remaining Part of the sentence= articles on various topics for three hours

Example 2: The poet had not been writing poems since morning.

To compare the sentence according to the structure,

Subject= The poet

hadn’t + main verb with adding ing = had not been writing

Remaining Part of the sentence= poems since morning.

Structure 2:

Question Form (Yes/No Question)

Had/Hadn’t + subject + been + main verb with adding ing + Remaining Part of the sentence (If have)?

Example 1: Had you been reading the passage for two hours?

To compare the sentence according to the structure,

Had = Had

Subject + been + main verb with adding ing = you been reading

Remaining Part of the sentence= the passage for two hours?

Example 2: Hadn’t you been playing cricket for two hours?

To compare the sentence according to the structure,

Hadn’t= Hadn’t

Subject + been + main verb with adding ing  = you been playing

Remaining Part of the sentence= cricket for two hours?

Structure 3:

Question Form (Wh Question)

Wh Word ( What/Who/How/Which etc.) + had/hadn’t + subject + been + main verb with adding ing + Remaining Part of the sentence (If have)?

Example 1: Where had you been doing this job since morning?

To compare the sentence according to the structure,

Wh word (What/Who/How/Which etc.) = Where

had = had

subject + been + main verb with ing = you been doing

Remaining Part of the sentence= this job since morning?

Example 2: Why hadn’t they been working since morning?

To compare the sentence according to the structure,

Wh word (What/Who/How/Which etc.) = Why 

hadn’t = hadn’t

Subject + been + main verb with ing = they been working

Remaining Part of the sentence= since morning?

Structure 4:

Question Form (Wh Question)

Wh Word ( What/Who/How/Which etc.) + had/hadn’t + been + main verb with adding ing + Remaining Part of the sentence (If have)?

Example 1: Who had been working this job for two hours?

To compare the sentence according to the structure,

Wh word (What/Who/How/Which etc.) = Who

had + been + Main verb with adding ing = had been working

Remaining Part of the sentence= this job for two hours?

Example 2: Who had not starting this construction since morning?

To compare the sentence according to the structure,

Wh word (What/Who/How/Which etc.) = Who

hadn’t + been + Main verb with adding ing = had not been starting

Remaining Part of the sentence= this construction since morning?

Structure 5:

Question Form (Wh Question)

Wh Word ( What/Who/How/Which etc.)+ Noun + had/hadn’t + Subject + Main Verb With adding ing + Remaining Part of the sentence (if have)?

Example 1: Which topics had you been selecting for presentation since morning?

To compare the sentence according to the structure,

Wh word (What/Who/How/Which etc.) + Noun = Which topics

had + Subject + been + Main Verb With adding ing = had you been selecting

Remaining Part of the sentence= for presentation since morning?

Example 2: Which things hadn’t you been alerting for two hours?

To compare the sentence according to the structure,

Wh word (What/Who/How/Which etc.) + noun = Which foods 

haven’t/hasn’t + Subject + been + Main Verb with adding ing = hadn’t you been alerting

Remaining Part of the sentence= for two hours?

Structure 6:

Question Form (Wh Question)

Wh Word ( What/Who/How/Which etc.)+ Noun + Preposition + Noun + had/hadn’t + Subject + been + Main Verb with adding ing + Remaining Part of the sentence (if have)?

Example 1: What kinds of birds had you been selecting to know about more since morning?

To compare the sentence according to the structure,

Wh word (What/Who/How/Which etc.) + Noun + Preposition + Noun = Which kinds of birds

had + subject + been + main verb with ing = had you been selecting

Remaining Part of the sentence= to know about more since morning?

Example 2: Which types of products hadn’t you been finding in the shop since morning?

Which types of gadgets hadn’t he been rejecting in this shop for an hour?

To compare the sentence according to the structure,

Wh word (What/Who/How/Which etc.) + noun + preposition + noun = Which types of products

hadn’t + subject + been + main verb with ing = hadn’t you been finding

Remaining Part of the sentence= in the shop since morning?

The past perfect continuous tense expresses an action which began in the past and continues for some time in the past and finished the action. It can be helpful for describing things like a long-term project or ongoing situation.
